The Pirate of the Oneiric
For Leila, I used Marvelous Designer to craft the shirt, pants, torn flag, skirt, and scarf. Additionally, I conducted UV layout in Autodesk Maya, modeled braid geometry as the base for hair, and utilized XGen interactive for hair grooming. I used Substance Painter for texture creation and painting and adjusted Arnold shaders accordingly.
Meet Leila, the star of my Look Development thesis project. While the character rig is from TurboSquid, I handled all aspects of her design—from clothing in which I crafted in Marvelous Designer. For the textures, I used Substance Painter and Maya Arnold shaders. I created the modeled the braids, and hair band, then used XGen to create the hair. Heather Freeze created the hair Jewelry for my model.
For the appearance of the younger sister, Leila, I aimed for a carefree vibe, from her tousled braids to her pirate attire. While hinting at her cultural background through elements like a Ghanaian lace corset and accessories, her overall look is earthy and slightly unkempt. This deliberate contrast with her older sister underscores their distinct personalities, as this project isn’t animated. Leila’s disheveled appearance reflects her rebellious nature and reluctance to conform to societal expectations of perfection. Instead, she embodies youthful exuberance and a resistance to growing up. Unlike her sister, Leila is less immersed in her cultural identity.
